SF Weekly: “Take Back Your Beaver” with Candace Roberts’ New Music Video
Candace Roberts, the woman behind San Francisco’s anti-gentrification anthem, “Not My City Anymore,” has struck gold again with “Take Back Your Beaver.”
Roberts shifts her focus from civic to pubic pride with this hairy tune, released last week with the help of a Kickstarter campaign. Lyrically, the song draws from personal experience; when Roberts was in her teens, her sister teased her with a rap song about personal grooming: “My sister’s got a big brown beaver. She needs to learn to keep it cleaner.” In her early twenties she was also rejected on a date due to her all-natural pubic hair.
This song is about her reclaiming her beaver, to do with as she pleases.
The sister character, played by Ady Abbot, delivers a nails-on-a-chalkboard speech before the song kicks off. Drop that razor and check it out:
